I know, this is coming a bit late but I would like to share my Shimla trip experience with you all. Shimla has been the summer capital since the British era. I saw Shimla from that angle during my visit.
I am a North Indian and from city near the footsteps of Himalayas. I have visited Shimla several times before. But this visit was very special for me coz I was travelling with my husband this time. This was his first visit to Shimla of course.
There are three possible ways to reach Shimla, via rail, car and by bus. We wanted to enjoy the scenery of the Himalayan hills so we opted for Kalka-Shimla Heritage rail route. We choose this option to see the beauty of Himalayas, the stunning sight scenes, freshness, and the greenery. The train, Himalayan queen, took 5-6 hrs to reach Shimla. The journey itself made our trip worth. One of the best experiences I recommend for everyone at least once. I just love travelling by train to Shimla. The beauty of those small railway stations and sceneries of Himalayan hills was just breath taking.
We visited Shimla in the month of October. Weather was very cold and pleasant as it was the middle of the October month. We had planned our trip three months prior in July and booked our tickets online for both hotel stay and Shimla-Kalka Heritage rail route accordingly. We stayed there in Shingar Hotel. It is a budget hotel located on The Mall Road and very near to The Ridge, so we didn’t climb much to reach The Ridge. In all, this hotel was a decent choice.
Talking more about the hotel, Shingar Hotel is a budget hotel hence it suits almost everyone’s pocket. It is a multi-storey hotel with around 7-8 floors. If you want a good city view then ask them for room on the higher floors. They have a small restaurant inside, where they provide continental and Indian food. My toddler was travelling with us so I preferred eating in hotel only. They provided good varieties of Indian food ranging from north Indian Punjabi food to South Indian Idli, Dosa. I liked the food there and even stay was nice.
Talking about the site seeing, there are many places to visit on The Mall road itself. The Mall Road is the most visited place in Shimla. It’s famous for all kind of shopping. You will find cosy hand made garments like sweaters, socks (yes, handmade woollen socks), gloves, caps, shawls and many more handmade woollen items. When I was in North I always loved to wore handmade woollen socks at home in winters. Now days these items comes in many fancy designs. These are must have items for the people who stays on cold locations. I love these tiny things.
Lakkar (wooden) bazaar is another famous place located near ‘The Ridge’. It is one of the oldest places in Shimla. It is popular for its wooden crafts and souvenirs. There were so many beautiful souvenirs and I wanted to buy at least one sample of each for myself and relatives.
What should I say more about this place? Enjoy all the pictures of queen of hills below.
Popular places to visit in and near Shimla are listed below:
The Mall Road
Christ Church on the ridge
Kufri minni zoo
The Green Valley
Shimla State Museum
There are lot more places to visit which we could not go due to lack of time.
We really enjoyed our stay there. I recommend that everyone should visit Shimla at least once in lifetime.
